This blog is a journal for my dissertation research on the philosophy of individuality. The topic of individuality covers all kinds of individuals, not just human individuals. Individuals are primarily understood in opposition to universals: any unique being (whether God, a rock, or my best friend) can be considered an individual, although I tend to be more interested in material individuals. Because of the coupling of individuality and substance in the philosophical lineage, I am particularly interested in the contemporary debates surrounding substance ontologies and relational ontologies in the philosophy of nature. Furthermore, besides the logical, epistemological, and linguistic problematics of individuality, I am mostly interested in the metaphysical problems of the ontological status of individuality, the problem of identity (persistence through time), and the problem of individuation. I come from a phenomenological background.
